Custer County, Idaho is one of the most picturesque counties in the Lower Forty Eight. It is rugged and remote. With spectacular mountains (including the highest peak in Idaho, Mt. Borah) and the world renowned Salmon River, Custer County stands uniquely diverse.
Over 92% of the land in the county is owned by either the Federal or State Governments. The county is comprised of approximately 5,000 square miles with a population of approximately 5,000 residents. There are no stop lights in Custer County. The Sheriff's Department has 6 deputies to patrol an estimated 900 miles of public roads.
The four seasons provide a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors from around the world. Some estimates put the number of visitors over 1.5 million a year.
The Number of Paid firemen, EMT, and Search & Rescue Personnel, 0.
The impetus for the recording of the CD "Wild Mango Tango" is the statistic above. Our county desperately needs vital equipment and training to attract new volunteers to help with the increasing call for these services.
In July of 2002 we had a number of fires on the public lands in Custer County. The largest was the Rankin Creek Fire. Some of the first responders were members of the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department, located approximately 20 miles from the fire. A number of these volunteer fireman did not even have the proper gloves to wear. They like the other volunteer fire departments, volunteer EMT's, volunteer ambulance drivers and volunteer Search & Rescue give their time and efforts generously for all that visit our County.
The making of this excellent CD was also a volunteer project. All of the songs were written by Leilani Jones. The performances, mixing and editing were gratefully offered free of charge. Our only expenses are the duplication and promotion of the CD's. Local EMT, Launna Gunderson, who also sings on the CD is spearheading the organization and collection of the Tax Deductible funds.
Launna has assembled a three person committee of volunteers to help in the distribution of the funds collected. They include, Vicki Armbruster, EMT-I / Idaho EMT of the year 2002 /Challis Firefighter and Joe Cosgrove, EMT-I, High Angle Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Stanley firefighter
