Cross Country Skiers:

You can see this current (8th) web version of this report at: http://home.custertel.net/~ckeene41/xcskirpt.htm
The 1st through 7th reports for the 2011/2012 year are saved at http://home.custertel.net/~ckeene41/xcskirpt1201.htm through http://home.custertel.net/~ckeene41/xcskirpt1207.htm (Archived reports end in 1201.htm, 1202.htm, 1203.htm etc.)

Added local XC Ski info is available at my main Salmon XC Ski Page at:
http://home.custertel.net/~ckeene41/cksalxcski.htm Note the links to information on all the William's Cr. and Chief Joseph Ski Trails and Trailheads. Also note that I corrected numerous links on that page.

Planned Trips:

1. Tomorrow, Friday 01/27/2012. Gene and I are planning to ski one of the William's Cr. Trails. Probably the William's Cr. Trail itself, or maybe the Shoshoni Meadows telemark run if there's more snow than I expect. Give me a call at 756-2085 or 303-1041 if interested. Bring wide skis. We could probably meet you at the Shoup Bridge CG at 10:30, but please call in case we change our mind.

2. Sunday 01/29/2012: Meet at the FS/BLM Parking lot at 10:00 AM or the Shoup Bridge CG at 10:15 for a ski trip to the William’s Cr. ski trails. I'm tentatively planning to ski the William's Creek Trail; accessing it either from the Ridge Road or up the Buckhorn Trail. Those wanting an easier ski could ski the Wapiti Loop and then ski up the bottom of the William's Cr. Trail from the Big Fir TH.

3. I'm tentatively planning a ski trip on Saturday, March 4 - more info next week.

Snow Conditions:

This year I've started my on-line ski trip reports again. Go to http://home.custertel.net/~ckeene41/skitriprpt.htm for the reports. Scroll down a ways and find the latest report on top. Scroll down for earlier reports. These may help you judge ski conditions. Send me any reports that you'd like to see posted. The last report was our trip up to Chief Joseph and the Richardson Cr. Trail.

1. William's Creek Trail System:
I'm not sure what ski conditions are like. I'll post some info tomorrow night on the above ski trips report site and on the on-line version of this report. The Lemhi Ridge Snotel shows total increases of 31" since January 14. However I KNOW that is way more than actual snowfall. Many of those increases are probably due to fluctuation in the depth sensor. However the net change is +7" so I'm sure that we've received more than that amount in actual snowfall. The total snow moisture went from about 64% of normal up to 77% of the 30 year average during that time. The snow depth at 4 PM was 25". Not as bad as it has been. Thus the Meadow Trail may be up to 20" by now.

Click Here for a description of the Trailheads and Click Here for my on-line copy of the Trail map (minus the Mukluk and Upper Shoshoni Trails).

2. Chief Joseph Pass Conditions: Last Saturday there was about 5 to 5 1/2 feet of snow at the gauge by the parking lot entrance. Currently the Saddle Mountain Snotel lists 5.5 feet (66") of snow depth. The total snow moisture (at 3 PM today) was 92.2% of normal.

2a CJ Groomed Trails: As of this afternoon there was probably at least 7" of new snow since last weekend and another inch is predicted tonight. However no more is predicted for the rest of the weekend so the groomers should have the trails in good shape for Saturday. CLICK HERE and click on the Chief Joseph link and see the last several reports. There also will probably be an update after they finish grooming tomorrow. Also check the Como Trails and Mt. Haggin reports for possible skate ski opportunities. Currently Como has enough snow for flat track skiing on most of their trails, but they still need more. It looks like Haggin may have some skate skiing.

2b. Chief Joseph Area "Ungroomed Trails". See the snow reports above. Most trails will require heavy trail breaking. Speed will be slower on the Richardson Cr. Trail and similar trails. As stated previously the Richardson Cr. Trail now has adequate snow to cover the downed logs. Click here to see any weather updates for Lost Trail Pass. Anyone skiing on steeper slopes should use caution. The current avalanche hazard has been downgraded from High to Considerable (on steep slopes over 35 degrees) but caution is still advised. Click Here for details.

4. Skate Ski opportunities: See # 2a above. CLICK HERE for Stanley & Sun Valley Areas including Galena Lodge, and Harriman Trail (Click the "++More++" on the bottom to expand the initial display.). Also Click Here for more Stanley info. Currently Alturas Lake and Park Creek both have been groomed but there was too much snow to make a good base for skating. Flat tracking is recommended but no tracks have been set. Check later to see if that's changed.

CLICK HERE for added links for Chief Joseph and William's Creek Snow and Weather Conditions. Previously the Lemhi Ridge Snotel snow depth was about 3" more than at the Meadow Trailhead. The Saddle Mountain Snotel depth was about 5" more than at Chief Joseph.
