My name is Cliff Keene, I retired from the Salmon-Challis Forest in 1998 and volunteered (timber database work) until the spring of 2000. I like to ski tour, telemark ski, and track ski. I still volunteer but now it’s to help maintain the ski trails. For the last several years, I’ve maintained an email mailing list to inform folks in the area about cross-country ski trips, and snow & weather conditions. As I add folks to the mailing list, I like to send them a “welcome message”. I then decided that it would be easier for all to publish this welcome message on my web site.
**In the past (1980’s & early 1990’s) we had a moderately active ski club here in Salmon called the Salmon Nordic Ski Association (SNSA). We spent quite a few hours volunteering to make a nice X-C Trail System near William’s Creek Summit (on the road to Cobalt). In the early 1990’s, with some assistance, I personally cut two of the trails SW of the Summit.
Tawna Skinner was the SNSA president. She often looked for others to take over as president, but there were no takers. Since the mid 1990’s the club has not been active. However in the late 1990’s we started an Email X-C Ski list and we started planning (almost) weekly trips. In the fall of 2001, I more or less took over the list. Except for Christmas weekend, we try to have a trip each week. I try and have a mix between Saturday and Sunday trips. We generally meet at the Stagecoach Inn Motel or the Forest Service/BLM Building for carpooling - usually about 09:30 - 10:00, depending on the trip. Our primary destinations are to the William’s Creek Cross Country Ski Area southwest of Salmon or to the Chief Joseph or Lost Trail Pass areas. A typical trip might be where we shuttle a vehicle to a lower spot and ski out and down some trail. Generally there are options so that beginning skiers have some alternatives.
**I also try to have at least one “Mid Week Ski”, often on Tuesday. This is as much for exercise as anything. I also check trail conditions and do minor trail maintenance. Call me at 756-2085 if you are interested. I also do quite a bit of maintenance in the fall before skiing starts. An on-going project is to create “by-passes” around some of the steeper slopes to aid less experienced skiers.
To some extent our informal mailing list is filling the void from the SNSA.
At one time most of our skiers were Forest Service folks, but now we cover quite a range. Currently I have about 70 on the list although we seldom have more than a half dozen for most trips.
I try to send out a “ski report” once a week. If you don’t want to receive one, just let me know. I can easily add you again, if you only want to be off temporarily. Almost all ski reports are also published on the web. I won’t publish my main email address on the web but you can send a “reply” to any email that I send you. If you can’t find my email address you can use my Yahoo address which is “ckeene41-a4” followed by the commercial at symbol and “yahoo.com” (without the quotes). I’ve broken this up for anti spam purposes. You can also call me at (208) 756-2085. In addition your email address will not be shown on any web page and it won’t be shown on the email. I send all group messages using the “blind copy” feature. This is to prevent your address from getting spammed.
