How to use this: Select the Date and time that you want to review. Glance at my remarks if you wish, and then click the Update Report Web Address. If you only want a quick summary of how the "leaders" are doing, just scroll down and read my remarks. I will often only comment about the top few mushers. Go to the bottom of this page for additional links and information. Go to http://home.custertel.net/~ckeene41/IditVirtualTourInst.htm for additional information on how to take a "Virtual Tour".
Note: In the remarks below, the first number before a musher's name is the current race position, the number after his or her name is the bib number. The bib number is always 1 more than the initial starting position. (Bib #2 starts first and Bib #62 starts in 61st position.) During the early part of the race a high bib number at the head of the pack indicates that that musher passed many others. Note: On the current standings page and all the archived log files, the orange color indicates that new information has been recorded for that musher. After an initial review you only need to read the records that are highlighted in orange.

111 03/08 - 19:12 0:56 Tue /race/race/logs/log_111.html 59 Bob Storey (r) 15 Lvs Finger Lake 03/07/2011 19:16 After 6h4m rest. Until more scratch, last place is now 59th position. It seemed like Bob had been here longer. He's quite a ways behind the other mushers. Hopefully he can speed up some. His leaving late keeps the Finger Lake and Rainy Pass and even the Rohn volunteers out longer than they may have planned.
Note: He's still running slow but not as bad as is looks. I just noticed that this is a delayed posting. This should have been recorded many hours ago.

59 Bob Storey (r) 15 Arr Rainy Pass
03/08 18:52 after an apparent 23h36m time in route. I say "apparent" because there's been some delayed reporting of his last few times. At any rate all mushers have now reached Rainy Pass. Bob's in last place - the "Red Lantern" position.

Now the race gets confusing. We start to see new names at the front as the previous front runners take their mandatory "24 hour layover". They can take the "24" at any checkpoint as long as they declare their intention upon checking in. Also the layover is not exactly 24 hours except for the musher that started last (Bib # 63). Bib number 62 takes 24 hours and 2 minutes. Thus subtract the bib number from 63 multiply by 2 and get the number of minutes to add to the 24 hour layover. Thus all racers are equalized.

129 03/09 - 09:36 0:16 Wed /race/race/logs/log_129.html 62 Bob Storey (r) 15 Scratches at Rainy Pass. I'm not surprised since he was so far behind.
57 James Bardoner (r) 57 is now apparently in last place unless he was missed at Rohn. His last time was leaving Rainy Pass 03/08 at 17:15 PM. This logfile is dated 03/09 09:36 AM. Allowing for a delay in reporting that still makes him 14 hours or so out of Rainy Pass. Most Mushers did the trip in under 5 hours.

all mushers have left Takotna for sure. It's never safe to say that all mushers have left a given checkpoint until they arrive at the next checkpoint. Sometimes they will leave and have problems and return. Usually when that happens, it's followed by a scratch.

Kris is now in last place. Note also now all mushers are on or past the Yukon.
The reason Kris' place is only 51 is that others have already scratched further along on the trail than 54 Brennan. Thus 52 Judy Currier & 53 Newton Marshall who scratched at Anvik warrent lower numbers.

The Smyth's have alway had fast teams. We'll see if that time difference still remains. At any rate it's still not a lock on winning with under 2 hours lead. The traditional mileage to Nome is 77 miles and one of the GPS lists shows 67 miles. That's enough that a fast team might pass if only 2 hours behind.
28 Nicolas Petit (r) 14 Lvs Unalakleet 03/14 16:11 after 7h13m rest as 1st Rookie.

This is close enough that 1st place is not certain. I do think that the 1st 5 places are fairly certain. 1st place will probably be John Baker or Ramey Smyth followed by Hans Gatt and Dallas Seavey. Fifth place will probably be either Hugh Neff (currently 5th) or Sebastian Schnuelle (currently 6th). Refer to the following times out of Elim:

48 Ellen Halverson 26 Arr Kaltag 03/15 21:30. Ellen is in last place. Kaltag is where mushers leave the Yukon River. It's always good when the last musher reaches this point. There is a good chance that they will be allowed to finish. Sometimes when mushers are too far behind they are encouraged to drop out but I don't think that will happen this year.
463 03/16 - 00:48 1:19 Wed /race/race/logs/log_463.html 9 Ken Anderson & 10 Jessie Royer Arrive in Nome. Ken passes DeeDee and Jessie Royer to take 9th place. Jessie maintains her lead in front of DeeDee.

657       /race/race/logs/log_657.html The best way to view the rest of the Archives is to open the last one and then in your Internet Explorer, edit the URL in the Address bar by changing the log number. For example if the address is: http://www.iditarod.com/race/race/logs/log_658.html, change the 658 to 659 and hit enter. Keep doing that until you get to the last log file. If a log file fails to open check to ensure that it's really the last one and not just a missing file.

581   0:00   http://www.iditarod.com/race/race/logs/log_425.html This line has the formula to create the hyperlink. FALSE
Use the following next year.   FALSE
        n/a
424         DO NOT SORT BELOW PREVIOUS ROW 5/
425         The 2nd previous record was the last at time of edit. Check this one, and if available, those below until they don't work any more.

Note:

1/ I suggest you check all the active archive links 1st BEFORE clicking the current standings. Also, NOTE: The last active archive page appears to be an hour or so earlier than the current standings. So if you want to be sure you are up to the minute hit current standings after checking all active archive links. Note that you may miss a few archives, unless you go back and check.
2/ The Date-Time is that shown in the dropdown list of log files. The "Lag Time" is the time since the last report. The times in the logfiles use the "24 hour clock ("Military Time") and that was used initially in the dropdown list. The dropdown list changed to AM/PM but I have continued to use the 24 hour clock.
3/ Note: Although the Hyperlink for log files is http://www.iditarod.com/race/race/logs/log_n.html, the http://www.iditarod.com portion is not displayed in the above column.
4/ If you have a recent version of MS Excel, you'll have more options if you open this file in Excel. Copy the web address Then open Excel and do a FILE - OPEN and paste in the web address. The result of opening this ".htm" file will be that it will look about like a normal ".xls" file. You should then be able to sort and do other spreadsheet operations. HOWEVER, if you are interested in making a copy for your own use, or have an older version of Excel, it might be better to open the ".xls" version. See the "Alternate Web Site for MS Excel" link on the right. When you attempt to open the ".xls" file you will may have to supply a password, use "anonymous", and when asked if you want to open this in read only mode, say yes. With either version you should then be able to save it on your own system and edit it with Excel, adding your own comments, etc. Let me know if you have any problems or if you need help understanding the formulas at the bottom of the page.
5/ If you are viewing this in MS Excel, you should be able to sort on any of these columns. HOWEVER DON'T SORT BELOW THE LINE INDICATED. There are formulas in these cells and the day of the week and time lag calculations will probably be incorrect if you do. Above this point the cells have values and sorting won't change them. Let me know if you have any problems.
